The CRU’s priority is protecting public safety from risks associated with energy including natural gas, LPG and electricity. The CRU’s legislative remit includes regulation of gas installers with respect to safety. This is carried out through the Registered Gas Installer (RGI) scheme. During 2025, the CRU is proposing to extend the RGI scheme to include the regulation of Non-Domestic Gas Works and from 1 January 2026, it is proposed that it will become law that only RGIs can carry out Non-Domestic Gas Works.

In December 2024, the CRU published a public consultation on the Non-Domestic Gas Works implementation seeking feedback from stakeholder. This consultation closed on 10th February 2025. The CRU will publish a decision paper to the consultation in the coming weeks.
